What we paint

Interior, exterior, cabinets, and everything in between.

Residential and light-commercial painting, with the prep done right. Pick a service to see how we approach it — and the work we’ve done like it.

Interior Painting

Walls, ceilings, trim, and doors — clean lines, even coats, and a home you can live in the same week. Prep and protection are included, not extra.

Exterior Painting

Siding, trim, doors, and decks finished to stand up to Kansas City weather — power-washed, scraped, primed, and painted right so it lasts.

Explore this service

Cabinet Refinishing

A brand-new kitchen look without a remodel — cabinets cleaned, sanded, and sprayed to a smooth, factory-grade finish that actually holds up.

Explore this service

Deck & Fence Staining

Decks and fences stripped, sanded, and stained to bring the wood back — then sealed so Missouri sun and freeze-thaw don’t take it apart again.

Explore this service

Drywall & Surface Repair

Cracks, holes, water stains, and popped nails fixed and blended invisibly — because fresh paint over a bad wall just highlights the damage.

Explore this service

Wallpaper Removal

Old wallpaper stripped, the glue washed off, and the wall repaired and primed underneath — so paint goes on a clean surface, not over a problem.

Explore this service

Popcorn-Ceiling Removal

Textured ceilings scraped smooth, skim-coated, and painted — the single update that makes a whole room read newer. Older ceilings get tested first.

Color Consultation

Free with every estimate, or bookable on its own — real fan decks, your actual light, and a color plan you’ll still like in five years.

Commercial Painting

Offices, retail, and light-commercial spaces painted on your schedule — after hours or in phases — so business keeps running and the finish looks professional.

Free color consultation

Not sure on color? That’s the fun part — and it’s free.

Choosing color is the step that stalls most projects. With every estimate you get a free color consultation: we bring the fan decks, look at your light, and help you land on colors you’ll still love in five years. Then you get a written, all-in estimate — no “we’ll see when we get there.”

  • On-site color consultation with real fan decks and samples
  • We test how colors read in your actual light, morning and evening
  • A written, all-in estimate — paint, prep, and labor, no surprises
  • No-pressure: the consultation and estimate are free, obligation-free

How we work

Prep, paint, and clean up — so the only thing you notice is the finish.

The difference between a paint job that looks great for one season and one that lasts is almost entirely prep and protection — the parts nobody photographs. Here’s exactly how a Truecoat project runs, and what we do to keep your home clean and livable the whole time.

  1. Estimate & color

We come out, measure, and talk through what you want — then a free color consultation and a written, all-in estimate. You know the colors, the scope, and the exact price before we book the job.

    Estimate usually within 48 hours
  2. Prep & protect

This is the part that makes the finish last: we cover floors and furniture, mask trim and fixtures, then scrape, sand, patch, caulk, and prime. Your home is protected before a drop of color goes on.

    Day 1 of most projects
  3. Paint

Premium paint, clean lines, and even coats — cut in by hand, rolled or sprayed to spec. One lead painter runs your job start to finish, so the quality and the crew stay consistent.

Interior room 1–2 days · exterior 2–5 days
  4. Walkthrough & cleanup

We walk every room with you, touch up anything that isn’t perfect, then pull the masking, haul off the debris, and put your home back the way we found it — cleaner, actually. Nothing’s done until you say it is.

From century-old homes in Brookside and Waldo to newer builds in Overland Park and Lee’s Summit — we know how Kansas City houses take paint, which surfaces need the extra prep, and how our weather works on an exterior. Cole Barrett

Owner & Lead Painter

MO Painting Contractor · 14 years on the brush

Cole started Truecoat after fourteen years painting for other outfits, tired of watching crews rush the prep and blame the paint when it failed. His whole standard is the opposite: do the prep nobody photographs, protect the home like it’s your own, and stand behind the finish in writing. He still runs the color consultation on most jobs himself — and he’d rather talk you into the right sheen than sell you the wrong one.

Renee Alcala

Project Manager & Color Consultant

Color consultant · scheduling lead · 11 years

Renee runs the schedule and the color consultations, which means she’s the reason your project starts when we said it would and ends with colors you actually love. She’s the one who brings the fan decks, reads how a color will behave in your light, and keeps the crew, the paint, and the timeline lined up. Homeowners tend to say she made the part they were dreading — picking colors — the part they enjoyed.

A word from the owner

Meet Cole Barrett — Owner & Lead Painter

I spent fourteen years painting for other outfits, watching crews rush the prep and blame the paint when it failed. Truecoat is the opposite bet: do the boring work — washing, sanding, patching, priming — protect your home like it’s ours, and put the warranty in writing. I still run most color consultations myself, and I’d rather talk you into the right sheen than sell you the wrong one.

When you call Truecoat Painting, you reach a local, family-run team — not a call center. Watch a quick hello, then book with someone you've already met.

What homeowners say

4.9 from 312+ Google reviews
“We’d been burned by a cheap painter before — peeling within a year. Truecoat’s prep was a different world: they patched our cracked plaster, covered everything, and cleaned up every single night. Two years later the walls still look freshly done. The free color help sealed it — we’d never have landed on the palette ourselves.”
D&Danielle & Sam FosterInterior repaint · Brookside, KCMO
“Our exterior was chalking and the caulk was shot. They power-washed, scraped, re-caulked, and spot-primed before a drop of paint went on — and it shows. Crisp lines, no drips on the brick, landscaping untouched. Written estimate up front matched the final bill to the dollar.”

“They refinished our orange-oak kitchen cabinets and I genuinely can’t believe it’s the same kitchen. The sprayed finish is smooth as glass — no brush marks anywhere. They masked the kitchen so we still used the rest of the house, and it was done in four days. A fraction of what new cabinets would have cost.”

FAQ

Questions homeowners ask us

How much does it cost? How does the estimate work?

Every project gets a free, written, line-item estimate — walls, trim, ceilings, prep, and materials, each priced so you can see where the money goes and trim scope if you want. The number we quote is the number you pay; if we find rot or damage once we open up a wall line, we show you photos and price the fix before touching it. No day rates, no "it ran long."

How long will my project take?

Most interiors run 2–5 days depending on rooms and trim; a full exterior is usually 3–6 days of good weather; cabinets run about a week including cure time. You get the schedule in writing before we start, and the same crew stays on your job until it’s done — we don’t bounce crews between houses and let yours sit half-taped.

What do you do to protect my home — and how is the prep?

Prep is the job — paint just makes it visible. We move and cover furniture, mask floors and fixtures, and then do the boring work most crews skip: washing, scraping, sanding, priming, caulking, and repairing drywall before a single coat goes on. At the end of every day the site is picked up, and at the end of the job it’s cleaner than we found it. That’s why our work still looks right years later.

Who actually shows up — employees or subcontractors?

Our own uniformed crews, led by a foreman whose name you get before we start — not a rotating cast of subs. Everyone is background-checked, and we carry full liability insurance and workers’ comp, which protects you if anything happens on your property. Ask any painter you’re comparing for the same paperwork; a real company shows it without a fuss.

What paint do you use? Does the brand really matter?

We quote premium lines from the major manufacturers and tell you honestly where it matters — high-traffic hallways, kids’ rooms, bathrooms, and sun-hammered south-facing exteriors earn the better paint; a guest-room ceiling doesn’t. You’ll see the exact product on the estimate, not just "premium paint," and we’ll happily match a color from any brand’s deck.

What areas do you serve?

Kansas City and the surrounding metro on both sides of the state line — Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, Prairie Village, Shawnee, Liberty, and the towns between. Local crews, local supply houses. Not sure if you’re in our area? Call (555) 555-5555 and we’ll tell you straight.
